A cPanel backup is not bad; it is just not something to rely on by itself.
The archive you generate usually lives in the same account's disk space. If the server is lost, so is the backup.
You have to remember to run it. In a busy week it gets skipped, and it cannot be taken retroactively.
Automatic host-side backups are kept only a few days on most plans.
Backups stored inside the account fill your disk quota until the site can no longer write.
Account backups are typically not encrypted; anyone with account access has all your data.
Nobody verifies the archive actually restores until the day it matters.

What we back up: files in your web root, your MySQL/MariaDB databases and your IMAP mailboxes. For most sites that is the entirety of the data.
What we do not back up: the cPanel account configuration itself — DNS zone records, email account definitions (mailbox contents are backed up, account definitions are not), cron entries, SSL certificates and subdomain definitions. These are recreated during a server change; our migration guide walks through it.
